Meccano Magazine Text Search

All Meccano Magazines (UK, US, French, German & Spanish) have now been put through OCR software and the OCR'd text placed in an invisible layer behind the scanned text.

I have also extracted all the text and put it into a database, which has enabled this Meccano Magazine text search facility to be created.

Note that there are a few deficiencies, caused by the limitation of the OCR programme and/or the poor text quality in some of the scanned Meccano magazines (caused mainly by high compression of the scanned image file or poor text in early magazines). Note that in some of the adverts when text is close to images that the text is not always captured properly. Also it sometimes doesn't always follow columns properly. Another problem is that the OCR programme did not seem to be able to reliably detect ¼, ½ or ¾ - but this is only really a problem in the Meccano model instructions.

Having said all that, the text recognition in the most of the articles is actually pretty good.

You can search on a up to five keywords and/or phrases and one can restrict the date range if required. The results are displayed below. You are able to display any page that you are interested by clicking on the link beside the appropriate result. Pages are then displayed by inserting in this page beside the search result. Unfortunately at the moment the search keywords are not displayed on the page. All the other search results remain on the pages and you just scroll up or down the page as appropriate to get to them.

J'ai également extrait tout le texte et l'ai mis dans une base de données, ce qui a permis de créer cette fonction de recherche de texte de Meccano Magazine.

Notez qu'il existe quelques lacunes, causées par la limitation du programme OCR et/ou la mauvaise qualité du texte dans certains magazines Meccano numérisés (causées principalement par une compression élevée du fichier image numérisé ou un texte de mauvaise qualité dans les premiers magazines). Notez que dans certaines publicités, lorsque le texte est proche des images, le texte n'est pas toujours capturé correctement. De plus, il arrive parfois que les colonnes ne suivent pas toujours correctement. Un autre problème est que le programme OCR ne semble pas être capable de détecter de manière fiable ¼, ½ ou ¾ - mais ce n'est en réalité un problème que dans les instructions du modèle Meccano.

Cela dit, la reconnaissance du texte dans la plupart des articles est en fait plutôt bonne.

Vous pouvez rechercher jusqu'à cinq mots-clés et/ou expressions et l'un d'entre eux peut restreindre la plage de dates si nécessaire. Les résultats sont affichés ci-dessous. Vous pouvez afficher n'importe quelle page qui vous intéresse en cliquant sur le lien à côté du résultat approprié. Les pages sont ensuite affichées en les insérant dans cette page à côté du résultat de la recherche. Malheureusement, pour le moment, les mots-clés de recherche ne sont pas affichés sur la page. Tous les autres résultats de recherche restent sur les pages et il vous suffit de faire défiler la page vers le haut ou vers le bas, selon le cas, pour y accéder.
