Introduction

I hope that you like the revamped Meccano Magazine section of my website. You should find it much easier to navigate around. It is also much more user friendly for small screen devices. One big advantage is that you no longer need to keep swapping between the index and page scan windows, everything is now on the one page. Please let me know if you find any problems or if you can think of improvements to it.

This website contains individual page scans of the UK, American, French, Spanish and German Meccano Magazines. You can also download of complete issues of all available magazines in PDF format. Some early (pre 1924) issues of the American magazines are missing. If anyone can supply scans of these missing magazines I would appreciate it.

This website also contains searchable and category indexes for all issues of the UK and American magazines together with all issues of the French magazine up to December 1955. It is hoped extend the indexing later on this year (when I can find the time), to include all the French magazines.

In addition to the UK, American, French, Spanish and German Meccano Magazines, this website also contains an index to the Meccano Engineer and the Meccanoman`s Journal. However for copyright reasons, it is not possible to include the scans of these publications on the website. You either have to refer to the actual magazines or to the CD containing these publications. This CD is available from MW Mail Order. Note - It used to be possible to display the scans via this website if you had the the CD and the files loaded into your computer. However this function is no longer possible due the tightening up of security in web browsers and so the facility has been removed.

Accessing the magazine scans

There is a facility for direct access to individual magazines for general browsing etc. See 'Magazines for Browsing' in the above menu. This allows you to select an issue by clicking on a thumbnail of the front cover which then takes to thumbnails of the pages of that issue for selection purposes. Also on the page showing the issues's thumbnails is the facility to download the complete issue in PDF format.

From there you can select a page to read. There is also a provision of having the Meccano Magazine page scan as a PDF file for easier printing etc.

A facility has now been provided to allow direct access to any page of the magazines (Useful if you know the page number you want to refer to). See the 'Direct Page Access' in the above menu.

Il est possible d'avoir un accès direct à des magazines spécifiques pour consultation etc... Voir 'Magazines for Browsing' dans le menu ci-dessus. Cela vous permet de sélectionner un numéro en cliquant sur une vignette de la couverture ce qui vous conduit aux vignettes des pages de ce numéro pour les sélectionner. La page affichant les miniatures des numéros contient également la possibilité de télécharger le numéro complet au format PDF.

Dans le menu déroulant, un accès a été prévue pour permettre d'aller directement à n'importe quelle page des magazines (utile si vous connaissez le numéro de page à laquelle vous voulez faire référence). Voir 'Direct Page Access' dans le menu ci-dessus.

Searching the Index

The Index is split into six main sections. See 'Indexes' in the above menu :-

Each of the sections of the index is further split into sub-sections and also into subjects. These indexes can then be used to find a particular article and then display scans of the relevant page of the magazine. When a page scan is displayed there are left and right hand arrows to allow navigation to adjacent pages. Note that because of the way that the indexes were produced, some articles will appear in more than one section of the index.

In addition a user defined search facility is provided which allows custom searches on either the whole index or parts of it. - See 'Keyword Search' under 'Indexes' in the above menu.

Chacune des sections de l'index est ensuite divisée en sous-sections et également en sujets. Ces index peuvent ensuite être utilisés pour trouver un article particulier et ensuite afficher des scans de la page concernée du magazine. Lorsqu'une numérisation de page est affichée, des flèches gauche et droite permettent de naviguer vers les pages adjacentes. UPDATES

11 April 2024 - I have now put all the French, German and Spanish Meccano Magazines through OCR software, which has placed the OCR'd text placed in an invisible layer behind the scanned text. This means that you can now select and copy the text in the OCR'd PDFs of ALL Meccano Magazines. As part of this I have scanned all the French Meccano Magazines from 1924 to 1959 at 300dpi and improved others. The Text search facility has also been updated to include all the Meccano magazines.

12 March 2024 - I have now put all the UK and US Meccano Magazines through OCR software, which has placed the OCR'd text placed in an invisible layer behind the scanned text. This means that you can now select and copy the text in the OCR'd PDFs of these Meccano Magazines. This has also allowed me to extract all the text and put it into a database, which has enabled a text search facility of all the text in the Meccano Magazine to be created. As part of this I have rescanned or improved the images of many of the US magazines. I am currently working on doing the same for the French magazines.

27 February 2024 - Following a suggestion, you can now navigate from page to page of the Meccano Magazines using the keyboard. Very useful if you are full screen mode. Details on the MM display pages. Also, when navigating from between pages of a Meccano Magazine, it goes directly to the top of the Meccano Magazine page image, for easier reading rather than the top of the web page.

5 May 2021 - The fault which stopped some Meccano Magazines being downloaded has now been rectified. Also all pages for the May 1959 Meccano Magazine are now available.

5 May 2021 - Scans of the early 1930s Spanish and German Meccano Magazines added.

25 April 2021 - The index to the French Meccano Magazine has been extended to cover all issues up to December 1955.

11 January 2021 - Following comments received, when browsing the pages of an issue, I have put them at the top of the page, with the page/issue selection underneath.

3 December 2020 - Index to the USA Meccano Magazine added.

29 November 2020 - Found out that pages 9 to 12 of the May 1925 US Meccano Magazine were missing. Now added them.

15 November 2020 - The whole Meccano Magazine section of my website has now been totally redesigned, in a more modern manner like the rest of my website and so is much more user friendly for small screen devices.

January 2020 - American Magazines for Aug/Sep 1916, Aug/Sep 1918, Dec/Jan 1919/20 and Feb/Mar 1920 added. Thanks to Pepe for the scans.

December 2019 - American Magazines for Aug/Sep 1917, Nov/Dec 1917, Mar/Apr 1918, Sep/Oct 1920, Apr/May 1921 and Dec/Jan 1922/23 added. Thanks to Kendrick for the scans.

August 2019 - I have now added in scans and pdf downloads of many of the American Meccano Magazines together with scans of all French Meccano Magazines from 1924 onwards. Indexing of these additional magazines has still to be done (Note that all the American Magazines and the French magazines from 1924 to 1937 have been scanned at 300dpi).
